Hi Amber,
The answer to this question depends entirely on the kind of vegetarian you plan to be. Will you rely on fruits, veggies and whole grains? Then you'll get healthy and drop the added fat stored on your body. But be prepared for a detox process. Fat on our bodies is where we store all the crap we eat and can't digest. We don't feel bad on a diet because we're hungry. We feel bad because our bodies are being forced to purge all the junk we've stored.
If you're going to rely on prepackaged veggie meat-stuffs, milk and cheese, you are little better than your meat eating friends. You may even find you gain weight rather than lose it due to the myth that going veg will make you thin.
As to the person who said don't snack between meals, that is the WORST advice for someone looking to slim down and get healthy. It is far better for us to eat 6 small meals a day than one or two huge ones. Have healthy veggie snacks with you at all times. Celery and nut butter. Branch out. Peanut, Almond, Cashew. Yum yum!
Don't buy into the "low carb" lie. Wash your hands of bad carbs. No more white bread. No more white sugar. No more white rice. Toss it all out. Go for whole grain goodness. Unrefined sugar. Brown rice.
Don't over cook your veggies. You need all that added fiber to carry the fat out of your body. The high fiber content of lightly cooked veggies and fresh fruits will literally pick up the fat and carry it right out of your body.
You should, during this time, be sure you drink a good amout of water, to keep the toxins flowing out.
Do add some kind of exersize to your day. Did you know walking is cumulative? You can walk 10 minutes at a time 6 times a day and that's an hour walk. You've got to move to jump start your metabolism.
Good luck.

A vegetarian diet has many variences. A person can still be a l/o vegetarian and pig out on chocolate, ice cream, and peanut butter. It all depends on what a person eats when they are a vegetarian. If they eat a lot of good, dark-green vegetables, whole wheat products, fruits, and such, and stay away from foods high in saturated fats and calories, then they would lose weight especially when combined with excerise.

Short answer--yes. Any diet will do better with some exercise, so do some hiking or something too. Be careful to learn how to eat properly as a vegetarian so you don't deprive yourself of key vitamins and whatnot, but generally speaking a vegetarian diet is a healthy one--low fat, lower calorie intake, and you are less likely to commit that occasionally gluttony the rest of us do--the extra large sundae or the second burger.
I had a freind who spent summer vacation as a migrant farmer (she was training to help get into the peace corps). She wasn't ever really fat, but she went from small but kinda squishy to hard-bodied and toned after a couple months of vegetarian diet and hard labor. I actually had to do a double-take when I saw her in the fall--she was pretty before, but I had never seen her look so good!

I'm glad that you decided to be a vegetarian - your body will thank you for that. I do hope that you did not become a veggie just to lose some weight. Vegetarianism is a lifestyle and a serious choice.
But to answer your question, yes, becoming a vegetarian can result in some weight loss. Please be careful as you make the dietary transition. Make sure you are still eating enough protein. It takes your body a while to get used to receiving nutrition in different ways.
Good luck!

Yes. A safe AND healthy way to lose weight. If you follow a vegan diet, even better. Because vegan diets are heavy on whole grains, veggies, and fruits, you tend to get fuller easier and quicker, thus, consuming less calories. Plus, if you turn into a vegan, you cholesterol goes down, and you lose body fat, unlike low-carb, meat and cheese-heavy diets (where you actually lose water weight, and lean muscle tissue, first).

Fantastic! Be vegetarian! Whether you lose weight or not, we are by birth vegetarians.
Ok. Do you think all vegetarians are slim and beautiful? No.
1. Reduce in take of oils and fats.
2. Don't take snacks in between your meals.
3. Drink plenty of water - at least 2.5 litres per day
4. Measure calories and eat sensibly
5. Take a brisk walk daily - minimum 10000 steps.
6. Above all do yoga and pranayama

not necessarily. I have been vegetarian since I was 12 years old. My problem is that I eat a lot of carbohydrates. I think I am chubby, but I am really average sized.
The best way to lose weight is to count calories and exercise. Plain and simple.

No vegetarian is not a good way to lose weight. Eating less and exercising more is a good way to lose weight. You have to get off your butt and walk, run, jog, etc.

by reducing fat in the diet you are going to lose weight. Be sure you don't eat too much grains as they can put on weight. I have been a vegetarian and I lost a great deal of weight. My body eventually needed more protein and I am no longer a vegetarian but I have kept my weight down by reducing fat in the diet.

I've lost 5 kilos in my first week. It's my 10th day and I have included salad with some protein (eg. egg/ lean chicken) as you suggested. After 4 years of trying, the fat is finally coming off. It truly feels like magic!
Get started today!
