How did they contract the disease ? were they injected?

The men had contracted the disease on their own. The government did not infect them. However for over more than 40 years the government did mislead them. They were told they had bad blood, and that they were being treated for such. Many of the mens' wives became infected and bore children that suffered from diseases as well.

From what I understand they were infected in many ways in an attempt to find out how it spread.
