I believe I read somewhere that in 1968 the virus was identified in Africa.
In 1981, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia, was alerted to reports of cases of a rare lung infection in previously healthy homosexual men in Los Angeles and then in New York. By the end of the 1980s, close to 100,000 men, women, and children in the US had been diagnosed as having AIDS and about half of them had died.
