Quitting smoking is not easy, but it can be done. To have the best chance of quitting successfully, you need to know what you’re up against, what your options are, and where to go for help.

Some people are able to quit on their own, without the help of others or the use of medicines. But for many smokers, it can be hard to break the social and emotional ties to smoking while getting over nicotine withdrawal symptoms at the same time. Fortunately, there are many sources of support out there – both formal and informal.

Telephone-based Help to Stop Smoking

Most states run some type of free telephone-based program, such as the American Cancer Society’s Quitline® tobacco cessation program that links callers with trained counselors. These specialists help plan a quit method that fits each person's unique smoking pattern. People who use telephone counseling stop smoking at twice the rate of those who don't get this type of help. With guidance from a counselor, quitters can avoid common mistakes that may self-destruct a quit attempt.

Telephone counseling is also more convenient for many people than some other support programs. It doesn't require transportation or childcare, and it's available nights and weekends. Counselors may recommend a combination of methods including medicines, local classes, self-help brochures, and/or a network of family and friends.

Support of Family, Friends, and Quit Programs

Many former smokers say a support network of family and friends was very important during their quit attempt. Other people who may offer support and encouragement are coworkers, your family doctor, and members of support groups for quitters.

To quit there are few things you can do: 1. you can buy nicotine gum...if that doesn't work the next best thing to do is try a patch... 2. If you want to quit with out using those things you set up a plan for you to stop....first put the money you would usually spend on cigarettes away in a savings account where you can't touch it. Then you won't have a lot of money to buy them because you need the rest, right? 3. Of the most craziest(and most expensive) is seeing a hypnotist. This can work for many people. I don't smoke but my parents do, it is a nasty thing. Stop as soon as you can!

Three interesting statistics.

1. Of every US person who has ever smoked heavily, about half have now quit. It is not easy but a lot more people do ultimately quit than you realize.

2. Of every person who has successfully quit, smoking, the average person who succeeded (permanently) did so on their 7th attempt. Thus, if you have tried and failed before, you have actually improved your odds of succeeding in your next attempt to quit. Don't get discouraged if you quit for while and then started again. Think of it as "practice" and get ready for another try!

3. If you have children, this one can be a huge motivator: Children of non-smokers are half as likely to become smokers themselves. Do it for your kids.

Good luck.

wellbuterin, chantix, and the patches seem to help a lot of people....good for you trying to quit. I too am going through the same thing, I am taking wellbuterin, I dont have the cravings and can go without but if I am bored I smoke, my Dr really has seen a lot of positive outcomes with this new drug chantix which blocks the nicotine nuerons. Im hoping it works as it is expensive, but hey if I quit, then I become rich by saving lots of money on my dirty habit. Good Luck to you

Have 5 bypasses and let them tell you the #1 thing you can do to ensure you never have to have this done again (just you, yourself) is to quit smoking. My husband quit cold turkey and never went back. He said he never wanted to have to go through that again of his own doing.

Seriously, just make up your mind to quit. That's the only way.

It seems like the best way is to be really, really motivated.

I once read where there was one group of people, that when they decided to quit, over 95% of them were successful.... gues who? People who had just suffered a heart attack.

Good luck ... you can do it !
