I stopped eating meat about 3 weeks ago and since then have had continual stomach cramps, diarrhea, nausea and acid reflux...could this be because I'm eating more cheese (ate cheese sparingly before), noodles (wheat), beans, fruits and veggies? Or is my body in shock from not eating meat anymore? (I have lost 5 pounds so far! yay!)

I am a recent convert to Vegetarianism, too, and I've had the same sort of symptoms. I am a bit lactose intolerant, so cheese is definitely not great for my stomach, but I believe the other problems are just an adjustment to all the additional fiber. I really do like eating this way, though, and I feel better overall.
Good Luck!

I was a Vegetarian for six years but this year i decided to go Vegan and I must say that I know EXACTLY what your talking about!

My stomach was horrible for the first month of being a Vegetarian! It's not that your not used to not eating meat!

My doctor at the time told me that I was just not eating the right ammount of a variety of food!

Try using a meat substitute in meals instead of just using noodles and cheese to make a meal : )

It really sounds like something you're eating isn't agreeing with you. You may have an allergy that you only had mild symptoms of previously, due to low consumption of the offending food. Go to your doctor. If you have health insurance, have them run a food allergy blood panel on you. If you have a serious food allergy such as celiac disease it will show up on this test and you can begin receiving treatment before permanent damage is done to your body.

One thing you can do right away is take Lactaid whenever you eat milk products for a few days--if you're not lactose intolerant it won't hurt you, but if you are it will help a lot. If nothing changes after a few days on Lactaid, just quit taking it. But either way, see your doctor!!!

I don't think your body misses the meat; that's not really how it works. I am almost sure that your body is struggling to process the heightened intake of cheese--that's hard for the body to break down. If you are eating a lot of beans, that could be contributing to your stomach cramps and diarrhea as well.

Sounds like lactose intolerance to me. Try non dairy milk and cheese. That should help.

Use more tofu than cheese. Use more soy milk, rice milk, almond milk or grain milk than cows. You'll feel better soon.

If you are dropping weight quickly, that is bad. The fat from your body stores is releasing toxic build up. So try not to drop the weight too quickly. You'll just boomerang back anyway.

Have some whole wheat toast with soy butter and peanut butter. That should sooth the hurgly gurgly.

The change from meat to high doses of dairy and fiber can give you G.I. upset. Try decreasing the dairy intake as much as possible. Do soy, rice and almond milk instead of cow's milk. Eat cheese from cows not treated with antibiotics or growth hormones. Drink tea made from anise seeds and peppermint to help with gas and digestion. Drink more water and get the proper rest too.

Happy eating!

If its any help I have been a vegetarian for decades and I do not suffer the ailments you list. Too much starchy noodles and too much cheese could cause acidosis but green leafy vegetables should do the opposite.
The best thing to do is get s professional assessment from a doctor. Quite possibly it is not related to the diet.

I know a woman who had the same symptoms you are having after going vegetarian. I'd definitely ask a nurse line or your doctor about it. You may have a wheat allergy or something too...which can cause starches to ferment in your intestines. Congrats on the weight loss! I just hope you can find a less painful way to achieve your goal!
