I'm 13 turning 14 soon and I need to eat kimchi. I tried some, and I almost puked from the sourness. I didn't grow up near kimchi, so that doesn't help. My mom says I HAVE to. Any way to help get used to kimchi and fast? (i just tried it today)
*I don't like pickled stuff or things that have a REALLY strong garlic taste to it.

I'm 14 turning 15, and I'm Chinese, but I am utterly in LOVE with kimchi. I remember at first, I didn't like it too much because, as you said of the strong garlicky flavor. I'm sure that if you dont force yourself to shove it down your throat, you'll start to like it. And, it also helps if you eat it with something else, something with a better, and maybe stronger flavor, so it can overcome that kimchi-ness. Usually rice will do the trick of making kimchi taste..less intense in a way.

I'm not Korean and I quite like Kimchi. But I'd say that if you don't like anything pickled or the taste of garlic, you're kinda screwed.

There's a lot of variety in kimchi, though, so you may be able to find a type you like.

hello! yes, im not korean, but i have traveled & tasted it many times. kimchi is very spicy, or it doesn't have to be. there are many types of kimchi, like the green ones, with the long tails, and the white part. i always eat the white part, because it is the least strongest. i totally agree with you, i HATE the garlic, it's disgusting and it leaves a BAD after taste. i think that you should ask your mom to make home-made kimchi, because it is the cleanest and most tasteful. when she makes it, [if she does] stand by her, and tell her how much goh-chu-jang [chili] she should put in. if you don't like it sppicy, then tell her not to put so much. also, maybe the sourness is coming because it is not ee-guh-suh, [ripe] . i could be from extreme coldness or heat, or it just simply spoiled. don't buy hanahreum kimchi. they spoil very quickly.

im korean too ...personaly i love it. If your mom says you have to but you dont like the strong pickled flavor, ask her to make or get either mul kimchi (water kimchi), or a freshly made kimchi thats not pickled enuff to taste that way yet.

another good kimchi dish is kimchi stew...as your mom if she knows how to make it. It is rather spicy but most people add lots of sugar to it and its really sweet...

i'm not korean but liked kimchi the first time i tried it. i had a lot of korean friends but couldn't recall if it was their influence but i eat kimchi with delight in knowing that the next dish is a complement to the overall meal at hand.
so the acquired taste is after all a taste one just have to develop properly

Kimchi is great once you find a product you like. It is similiar to the italians making spaghetti sauce. Everyones has there own recipes. Try different markets and pick the one you like or make your own
