Depends... is it a dry cough or a productive one?

If it's a dry cough.....
Try one of the Robitussin ones... they have different formulas depending on your symptoms, too. It's pretty safe stuff to bet on.

Also -- give him some Halls cough drops. They might help ease the tickle in the back of the throat that makes him cough.

If it's a productive cough....
Give him Mucinex -- it will make it MORE productive and eventually lessen his need to cough as more of the gunk comes out. If he still needs a cough suppressant, give him the Mucinex with the cough suppresent in it.

It works wonders.... I promise!

If it's a dry cough, Look for a product with dextromethorphan in it--it's a cough suppressant, which it sounds like he needs. If it's a productive cough (aka he's coughing up phlegm) he should be taking a product with guifenisen in it. That's a mucolytic that will loosen the mucus so it gets out of his chest. The cough suppressant should then only be used at night so he can get some sleep.

I'm glad you asked actually. When a man reaches 40 there is this chemical in the brain that automatically activates, sending signals all the way back to the planet Mars where the Manly headquarters are. They in turn send instructions to make complete personality shifts so as to off balance the secret female agents from the planet Venus. See, there's a long standing intergalactic cooties war between males and females that most of the population know nothing about that has been raging for thousands of years.
