A friend of mine was told by his doctor that he had been exposed to herpes in the past, but did not have it at the present time. What does that mean. I thought that once you had it; you always had it?

It likely means that he has the herpes virus, but has not yet had an outbreak of sores. He would be contagious if he did have an outbreak, but I believe that now he is okay. They might put him on Valtrex to prevent him from ever having an outbreak.
