you sound like a very close family, he is so blessed to have people around him who care so much, yet he also needs to feel that it is "ok" to cry or grieve, he needs to be told that he has this permission from all of you. with family like he has, he will stay a winner no matter what...God bless you all...

Hi, Nancy. The laughter will probably be scarce for a while. Your brother has legitimate grieving to do for his loss, and he will need extra support and understanding for the next few months, at least. During this time, you can help him have hope for the future, and you can provide him with a new direction in his life.
There are many things WE can do to overcome type II diabetes, and improve life as a Type I diabetic. I've been researching alternative medicine, and the amount of help that's available to diabetics is amazing.
Natural remedies are quite effective, and include:
Cinnamon
Bitter Melon
Gymnema Sylvestre
Nopal cactus
American Ginseng
Fenugreek
Chromium picolinate
Cinnamon regulates glucose, and has a polyphenol compound called MHCP that mimics insulin and activates cell receptor sites. A quarter teaspoon twice daily makes a difference. Fenugreek increases blood flow and inhibits the growth of infectious organisms. Everything on the list has a use in fighting diabetes. Learn how to use these herbs and don't fall victim to diabetes needlessly. You can find out about about them on line, or in a book I read cover to cover--
"One Son's Quest for the Cause and Cure of Diabetes", ISBN 7890766313
The author, a doctor, lost his mother to diabetes and spent the next 20 years finding a way to overcome it. My brother was dying of diabetes, and I was just starting to need insulin when we came across this definitive work which came out in February 2005. We both lead mostly normal lives now. It's a life saver, and the best money you'll ever spend on the subject if you decide to go that way.
You might want to check Abe Books, Alibri's, or Amazon.com for a good used copy cheap. I bought mine new, and I think it was about $35. I don't get any money from anybody for telling you this--just want to help, and the techniques in this book is what made the difference for me and mine. Best of luck.

I would really recommend you look into the life of Amina Munster (That is her nickname.) She, too, has lost a limb, one of her legs. And she also lost most of her fingers on her right hand.
She's a model. And a very fascinating woman. Maybe you can show him her life and help him get inspired a little. She talks about it a lot, actually, making fun of how she has a peg leg and how she's not a pirate and such.
Trust me: meet her, research her, and present her to him. She defines a new beauty, which is what he will ultimately have to deal with.

losing a hand will take a while to adjust to....While I do believe in keeping a positive attitude, I think a little sympathy couldn't hurt either. Sometimes people need to cry and then look for the positive from there !! God Bless you and your Family

Really sorry to hear about that... How old is he? Just keep reminding him that he is so lucky compared to people that lost their eye-sight, both legs, have cancer or aids, got paralyzed in car accidents, are in coma, lost their relatives, or died due to some accident. I would not emphasize that his hand is gone in either positive or negative ways and would not joke about it, just accept and love him as is. I would use the above examples only if he gets depressed...

Jim Abbott is a baseball player born with out a hand . he believed in himself. Help your brother in his time of need because just know i bet he would do the same. be supportive help him alot and be kind. Throw him a party and do activities that you need only one hand. NEVER make fun of him that will make him feel like crap. make him feel loved and wanted even with only one hand.
I hope this helps.

just being cheery on the surface is not enough to keep him up.
he needs counseling/therapy to work through the issues.
don't pretend there's no problem. talk to him honestly about the problem and his feelings and distress about it. fun and joking is good too but not all the time.

just give him support and lots of love. Be there for him when he feels down for any reason. Let him know that you love him very much and that life goes on.
