Good effects from dieting are the obvious ones. Weight loss, procurement of essential vitamins and minerals, and long term health benefits.
Bad effects can be long term health complications resulting from not seeing a doctor first. So if you are practicing the wrong kind of diet, you maybe denying yourself the essentials your body needs. Secondly, dieting sometimes is a temporary fix. Usually, people who diet in this manner, quickly regain the weight faster and more than before.

A good effect is that you lose weight and hopefully eat better, healthier foods, which make you healthier. But on the minor side, some "diets" eliminate vitamins, minerals etc., that your body needs. So I believe that the best diet is just to try and eat healthy foods and to limit the amounts of all foods you eat. This way you would find it easier to stay on your diet. Fad diets usually are the worst ones and so called "diet pills" are just a scam and not good for your health.

Dieting is the best method I know of to GAIN weight. I assume your prefer the opposite effect? Your body is a very efficient machine which will conserve fuel by lowering metabolic rate...encouraging, weight gain. To LOSE weight and NOT have it reappear again in a few weeks; you need to implement a total plan of diet and exercise. Exercise increases your metabolism. NEVER reduce your daily caloric intake by more than 20%. Diabetics should consult a nutritionist.
