well here some ideas to help quit:

~make a list of reaons why you want to quit smoking and read the list whenever you have the urge to smoke!

~set small goals. try quiting one day at a time. every year the american cancer society sponsors the "Great American Smoke-out," a campaign that calls for all smokers to avoid smoking for one day!

~if possible, avoid being with people who smoke and stay away from places where lots of smokers hang out.

~change any habits you have that are linked to smoking. For example, if you smoke after a meal, take a short walk instead and learn about other methods of relaxing and relieveing stress.

~exercise when you feel the urge to use tobacco. Stretch, take deep breaths, go for a walk, or take a ride on your bike, etc.

~think positively, seek encouragement from you non-smoking friends.

~eat healthful snacks instead of reaching for tobacco.

good luck!

Step 1: Find a good reason to quit for wife, kids, a pet, reduse the tax $$ that the politics can have, IE My state taxes on a carton went up $10 a year for 3 years in a row to fund babysitters (pre-pre school)

Just slack off, it's easier,

For a week just record how often do you have a cig, like once every 15 min ( think that was a pack)
The next week, do one every 20 min,
the next week one every 25
etc. when you get down to 5 a day you proably can go cold turkey.

I know exactly how you feel. I am 48 and quit on January 1, only to smoke 20 days later on my birthday. What worm in my head told me that it was ok to just smoke on my birthday? Anyway, here I am, on day one all over again. It sucks.

Just keep quitting. I am serious. It took me a million "trial runs" before I was really able to put them down and not go all to pieces emotionally. Now it's just a minor annoyance and not that "I cannot live without a cigarette" feeling.

Also, exercise helps. Naps help (if you are sleeping, you are not smoking!)

Good luck to you. You WILL succeed.

And thank you for posting this question. You helped me today.

It'll sound funny but if you really want it you can do it. don't say it's the last pack when you buy it. through it away now and try not to touch it for at least a week. make a short term plan, 15 days and then another 15 and so on. tr not to stay alone to much, and get rid of all the hidden packs or forgotten ones in your apt. tell everyone you know you have to quit cause of a health problem and ask them not to give you one for any reason. they won't!!! Good luck. it'll be hard and painful maybe but life without it is better. You'll see!

“Hypnosis is the most effective way of giving up smoking, according to the largest ever scientific comparison of ways of breaking the habit. Willpower, it turns out, counts for very little”. (New Scientist, Vol 136 issue 1845, 31 Oct 92, pg 6)Results included 48 studies of hypnosis covering 6000 smokers, that were published in the Journal of Applied Psychology which clearly showed that hypnosis was three times more effective than nicotine replacement therapy

Whenever you feel the need to smoke after you
have decided to quit, get up and move around instead. A brief physical activity can provide you
with the lift that you may have received from nicotine
