Jeez...I use to get tonsillitis LOADS when I was younger.
Basically there is infection gathering in the glands (tonsils) in your throat. This causes them to swell up and causes the pain and discomfort.
Normally a broad spectrum antibiotic will do the trick like Amoxyl or flucloxacillin...most penicillin type antibiotics work well with Tonsillitis.
In the mean time..while your waiting for the antibiotics to kick in and do their job (usually 3 days) you can use an antiseptic analgesic spray like Chloraseptic. It acts in the same way as a mild local anaesthetic numbing the throat and makes it easy to eat or swallow (without that dreaded broken glass in your throat feeling)
Available on prescription or a cheaper alternative...over the counter in all Chemist shops.
Don't waste your money on those anaesthetic pastiles you suck on...you'll feel your tongue numb but your throat will still hurt!

This doesn't get rid but certainly soothes the symptons. Pour 1 1/2 tsp each of liquid glycerin (available at chemists/ phramacies - the plain not flavoured stuff) and honey into a glass ad a good slosh of lemon juice. Top up with hot water. Drink. I use this as a preventative measure nowadays but when I was young I had tonsilitus every month for 2 years ( A result of glandular fever - mono). The great thing is that you can drink in addition to taking paracetemol as it has no drugs in it! if you add rum or whiskey it becomes a hot toddy

First thing, see a doctor and get antibiotics. Also get yourself some analgesic gargle (this will help the pain) Do not suck over the counter cough sweets - they will make it worse. Once you have done this go to bed and stay there because rest is essential. Tonsilitis is very infectious particularly at this time of year when most people have the windows closed. Take aspirin or paracetamol to bring your temperature down.

I used to suffer every 6 weeks with tonsilitus. I did eventually grow out of it but Antibotics/pencillin is the way to go. In the mean time gargle with TCP to kill the infection and then gargle with soluble asprin to take the swelling down and ease the pain.
Hope you feel better soon.

The aspirin gargle and antibiotics remedies as suggested are right.
However,I suggest you are also suffering from Asthma-with the breathing difficulties you outline. If not that then you have a chest infection and with these symptoms you need antibiotics now so as to avoid the risk of pneumonia.See your doctor

Do not remove tonsil because it acts like a fuse to your health anything goes wrong the first thing to get affected is the tonsil denoting something alien is entering your body and if you remover this one then the body itself would be affected. Hence go to a homeopath as their are wonderful medicines in homeopathy to cure your problem without any surgery or side effects. All the best.

Anti-biotics will cure the infection, but for long term cure have them removed, this really depends on how old you are, and how often you have tonsillitis.
I was have an infection every other month, and they removed mine at the age of 28. 6 Weeks off work and very bad infection in the wound, never felt so ill in my life, could not swallow or eat anything solid for 4 weeks.
Speak with your doctor and he will give you options.

Be cautious of your tonsillitis! Don't get it too often because according to studies this may lead to heart disease and kidney affectations. You have a similar case with my mother and sister.
To be able to soothe your throat, you need a warm salt solution (a glass of warm water with salt) ang gargle it. Keep away from sweets and cold foods and drinks even from cold environment. Eat nutritious and clean foods because eating unsanitary foods may lead to this.
Better consult a physician if this is taking too long.
