How come Americans serve up potato chips with fish or burgers instead of french fries. I learned this the hard way in Michigan. Imagine my disappointment. Gimme my fries dammit! Or onion rings.

I am in India but my grandson is in Michigan,he loves french fries,I"ll pass this tip over to him,to be sure to ask for fries & he'll get them,I've learnt something new both from the question & the answers,Thanks.

Not every american or american restauraunt does this. Most of the time, there is the option of french fries even if they normally do serve chips. You just have to check the menu.
If you are at a home, that is the option of the cook, unfortunately. I can tell ya' if I served chips my hubby and son would personally get out the fries and deep fat frier to make their own*L*. They adore their fries.

That's actually not common. Most places serve fries, but some do the chips instead. Mmmm, onion rings. Those, alas, are usually a special order item here.

Must be your part of the country-serve fries and only fries in NY. Onion rings are always a 2nd choice round here. You have my sympathies.

may be you asked for fish and chips. chips in most other countries are french fries. potato chips in those countries are called crisps, so if you are not from the States, you might have said you wanted chips instead of french fries.

In some places, you just gotta let them know you want fries. Often, the chips are a little complimentary addition when you don't order the fries.

It's about time we showed the French and the Americans that we don't want their fries. I am campaigning for a ban on anything French and that includes fries, wine, knickers and letters.

I have never been served chips with anything if I didn't order them. If you want french fries, you have to order them!

Really? I have not heard of that, but have never been to Michigan either. Just make sure that you always request fries.

Move to Texas. Fries are all they serve with sandwiches around here.
