Type O is the universal blood type, and O Positive is the most common blood type, at least in the USA. O Negative is slightly rare. Some places will give you money for blood or plasma. I tried doing that once, but I don't think it's enough money to be worth it, it was a long wait, and I had to be around a bunch of homeless alcoholics (that's the people who usually give blood for money). I donate blood a lot, but I do it for free at the Red Cross. I don't think there's a lot of people with O negative blood, so it's very decent of you to donate blood.

About 6% of the population has O negative blood. You're correct it is the universal blood type. O positive can be use for all the positive blood groups ... but O negative can be used for all of them ...negative and positive.

They changed the law in the '70s where blood used for transfusions had to be donated and not paid for. The reason was that people lied to get money. You are asked a series of questions before donating. Concerning your traveling, sex life, and health. For example a piercing or a tattoo could prohibit you from donating for a year. Anal sex will also put a damper on saving a life. Before it was the law ... some people would answer these and other questions un-truthfully just to get the money.

Many blood banks offer incentives ... T-shirts, ice cream, pizzas etc. .... but no money.

There are companies that do pay for blood but the blood isn't used for transfusion in the U.S. It's mainly used to test equipment. Some is sent to other countries.

O- is the universal blood type, I have it but can't donate because I'm too anemic, they won't take it. I don't think they pay you anymore but sometimes they give out things like movie passes or t-shirts or ice cream certificates.

There are private blood banks that pay donors. Most seem to be charity organizations where people to it to give to others in a special way.

O Neg is the universal donor because even people who do not have the rH factor can take it.

And I have the O positive blood type, is that universal also?

EDIT :
