Acute bronchitis is almost always viral and antibiotics are not prescribed. Chronic bronchitis is normally caused by irritants such as cigarette smoking. For acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis (AECB) the prescribing of antibiotics is controversial but they are normal prescribed.
