I think this might be an elizabethan dessert, or might even predate elizabethan.

In the dessert fruit fool, the word fool comes from the French 'fouler' meaning puree or mash.

Fool as the name of a kind of custard dish, originates from 1598 (also called trifle, which may be the source of the name). To trifle with or fool around have the same meaning.
