I think that what happened to you is a downside of being in the age group you are. It's an adult simply asking the 'younger generation' to muck in and lend a hand shifting a few bits and pieces.
And I don't feel you should resent this, especially if what was required was a somewhat too much for the hostess to do by herself.
Had she not asked you, would you have stood by and watched her do this by herself? I hope not.
No,generally guests are not asked to help set up but if I'm invited anywhere I will always offer to help clearing dishes from the table or whatever needs doing and so will guests when they come to us.Why not? We're all friends and a helping hand costs nothing.
I wouldn't think twice of asking for help from a guest if I was on the spot and I don't think the guest would be in my home to begin with if they were the
type to be churlish or resentful on being asked.

Yes, I would find it very rude! At the end of the day, it doesn't matter what gift it is people bring, whether its a cheap bottle of wine of a bottle of expensive champagne, it's the principle of the thing and the thought that counts. Its just good etiquette here in the UK; I personally wouldn't dream of turning up at a party empty handed.

I'll give her the benefit of the doubt and say she was running behind schedule. In the case of the heavy furniture it was likely that she couldn't do it by herself.
It was a faux pas, but without more information I wouldn't call it outright rude.

I was brought up with a helpful attitude. Some people as they get older need a bit of help. If there is something going on, why not help? Don't want to go on and be rude.

Did they tell you what time the party was? If I get to a party early then I kind of expect to have to help set up.
