Yes, you can transmit STDs while rimming.
If you have herpes simplex 1 (cold sore virus, prevalent in 60% of the population), you can give your partner herpes lesions around his/her anus. Not pleasant!!!
In some rare instances, you can pick up syphilis during rimming of your partner has a chancre near his/her anus.
A lot of diseases are spread fecal-orally, meaning you can catch them during rimming. Diseases include E. coli infections, shigellosis (causes profuse, bloody diarrhea!!!), hepatitis A, stomach flu (norovirus) and so forth.
The way to prevent these problems is to use a barrier like nonmicrowavable cling film or a dental dam to cover the anus before you engage in analingus.
