The Chinese have been using chopsticks for five thousand years. People probably cooked their food in large pots, using twigs to remove it. Overtime, as population grew, people began chopping food into small pieces so it would cook more quickly. Small morsels of food could be eaten without knifes and so the twigs gradually turned into chopsticks.
Some people think that the great scholar Confucius, who lived from roughly 551 to 479 B.C., influenced the development of chopsticks. A vegetarian, Confucius believed knives would remind people of slaughterhouses and were too violent for use at the table.

It's commonly known that the Chinese invented chopsticks (or kuaizi in Chinese) as a set of instruments to be used when eating but the reason behind that is not commonly known. Actually, the Chinese were taught to use chopsticks long before spoons and forks were invented in Europe (the knife is older, not as an instrument for dining but as weapon). Chopsticks were strongly advocated by the great Chinese philosopher Confucius (551-479BC). Chinese people, under the cultivation of Confucianism, consider the knife and fork bearing sort of violence, like cold weapons. However, chopsticks reflect gentleness and benevolence, the main moral teaching of Confucianism. Therefore, instruments used for killing must be banned from the dining table, and that is why Chinese food is always chopped into bite size before it reaches the table.

Same reason as why the Caucasians use fork & knife, or why the Middle Easterners use hand - it is culture! Besides, the Chinese (or any race except Korean that uses chopsticks) always lift up the rice bowl when eating, so you will need equipment that can pick up food without using two hands, and the chopsticks let you do just that.

It's CULTURE, and sometimes we just got to learn to accept
that in this world , not only chinese uses chopsticks to eat,
other races also have their own special way of eating their foods.
- Indians and Malays use their hands to eat.
-Caucasions eat with knife and fork/spoon.
Whatever it is we just got to accept other pple's culture and respect them as how they are.
This is peace living, and cultivates understanding.

The CHINESE use chopsticks because THERE are no knives, forks, or spoons on THEIR tables, so when THEY'RE hungry, they use chopsticks.
Spelling and grammar are not our enemies. They are our friends because they help us to communicate.

because forks and knives did not come about into Chinese culture until about the 12th century or so. So, bamboo was used.
