Every person regardless of health should drink a minimum of 2 litres of water per day. I am type 2 diabetic and try my best to drink 3 plus per day. Water is essential for the bodys processes, to help filter the kidneys and keep the liver and cells healthy etc.
Chewing ice is fine, it's just adding to your water intake.
As to the diabetes, being overweight will certainly increase your risk of developing adult onset which is what happened to me at 33. I was unhealthy, about 15kg overweight for my BMI, I smoked, ate takeaways like they were going out of fashion and got zero exercise.... and I only had one aunt on my mothers side who developed it in her 70's so you can't call mine hereditary either.
Do you get much/any exercise? What is your diet like? Do you eat too much junk food or have a balanced diet with the occasional treat?
My advice to stop it before it developes is to try to get that excess weight off. Start exercising every day, a 30 minute brisk walk will do you wonders. Start eating or try to maintane a healthy diet.. lots of fruits and vegies, lean meats trimming the fat, whole grains, cut out most of the carbs - the pasts, rice and white breads.. and drink atleast 2 litres of water per day.
I am 165cm's at 38 yrs and my BMI is 28 or 29. I've been told my ideal BMI is 25 which means I need to get down to about 70kg. I am presently 83kg. So I am working on that and slowly loosing weight each week with a new programme I am on.
It's not easy, to eat healthy, lots of salads and small amounts of protein and very little carbs, get daily exercise. It requires organisation and will power. :)
I hope I've helped to give some advice from my own experience.
Good luck to you!

I think it is very very bad to chew ice. very bad. (just kidding). There are far worse things than chewing ice. I wonder if you have a family history of diabetes since you are worried about getting diabetes? The risk factors are being over 40, family history and being overweight. They are only risk factors though, so you may not be close to getting diabetes at all. The only one of those you have control over is your weight, so if you are concerned, losing weight might help. I have heard of people who have been overweight who develop diabetes, once they lose weight the diabetes isn't a problem anymore (they can virtually eat what they want). If you are concerned about your ice addiction, try going for a walk instead.

Hi there,
Chewing ice is not unusual, and is not harmful providing the water it is made with is clean. nine cups of any fluid per day (200ml) is 1800ml or 1.5 liters. The average intake should be about 1 liter a day.
You mention being overweight and you may want to do something about this as being over weight in your age group can lead to presentation of Diabetes II .
This is maturity onset diabetes and is usually seen at around 45-50. But cases in younger people have been known.
As to how close you are to being a diabetic, I would venture to say that you should not be thinking in these terms. If your blood sugar level falls withing normal levels and you exercise regularly and have a better approach to diet you will not need to worry about diabetes
You have greater risk of cardiac overload by taking in too much fluid and not exercising. So I suggest doing some walking and physical exertion. Combine this with a healthy diet ( no fries diet coke, skin on cooked chicen.
Eat lean meat, lots of fruit and vegetables and you will be well on the way to a healthier you.
You have a lot to lose, but your gain is health and a good self image

I love to chew ice too.And yes, I am anemic.
Simply being overweight does not cause diabetes. It can help to encourage it though.
Both type 1 and type 2 are autoimmune diseases.
Good luck.
