She has cut down to 2 or 3 cigarettes a day but she needs to quit. Her doctor said she would maybe live another 5 years if she continues to smoke. What will it take to make her want to quit?

She uses any little thing that happens in her life to be a reason to have a cigarette.

No matter how bad you want her to quit, there's nothing you can do to make her. You could always show her some information from the American Cancer Society about how much better she will be if she does quit smoking. The Lung Association says within 24 hours, a smoker who has quit is already markedly healthier than they were when they smoked their last cigarette.
Smoking is two part. One is the drug, nicotine, easily replaceable with nicotine patches and gum. Two is the oral activity, and I'm not trying to be Freudian here, but the action of smoking is satisfying in itself, so gum or candy can help with oral satisfaction.
Its better for your mom to use half a box of patches and two packs of sugar free gum than it is to smoke three cigarettes. While nicotine is harmful, smoking is 10 times worse, especially to those with diseases like COPD.

The only thing that will make your mother quit smoking is her decision to do so. It must be so frustrating for you to watch her continue a habit can end her life. She might be just as frustrated as you are.
She has probably tried to quit tobacco hundres of times. If she has never tried, there are programs through the American Lung Association, American Cancer Association. Lots of info can be retrieved on line under 'smoking cessation'.

Don't hound her; it will make you both miserable. Tell her how much you love her and that you want her to be a part of your life for many years to come.
I think that smoking is the worse habit there is. People have kicked heroin and other major substances but can't give up cigarettes. I don't think you could find many smokers who say they are so glad they started and continue to smoke. Most say they wish they never picked up that first cigarette.

I feel for you and hope things work out. Take care.

You can't make her quit. But you can call to her about getting her will in order and to make sure you are in it. Remind her that you are the one concerned about her health so she leaves you a big chunk of her estate. Tell her that you will help plan her funeral ahead of time so you won't have a lot to do at the last minute.

( only 5 cigs a day. ) if she is in hospice care she is dying. let her smoke and be happy till she dies!! and yes, she can develope pneumonia!! from being old and in hospice around sick dying people. also, her lungs are already damaged beyond repair at stage 4 COPD, so that is why she could develope pneumonia also.

Unfortunately for you - the decision is hers to make. Let her know how you are feeling and how difficult it will be to have her absent in your life. Let her know that you were hoping she would be around to see: 1. You graduate; 2. Get married; 3. Be involved with future grandchildren, etc.
