My daughter is 8 months old and has not gained much weight at all since she was about 4 months. She has grown in length and head size, but just not weight. Our doc is sending her for all sorts of tests to rule things out. One of them being cf. I am so nervous. She has shown no other symptoms other than not putting on weight. No respiratory problems, normal poops. How worried should I be? No cases in the family and she is right where she should be in every other developmental aspect. She does A LOT of spitting up. Doc just gave me Pepcid for her and she also has some special powder to add to her food to help with the weight gain. I know there are so many other things out there that could be wrong (something as simple as acid reflux or high metabolism), but when you hear cf as a parent that just seems to ring in my ears.

I can understand your concerns as a parent. Fortunately tests for CF these days are quite sophisticated and a normal or negative test would highly suggest absence of CF. I would still stay in touch with the pediatrician though. Otherwise remember that you always have a right for a second opinion too, good luck

I don't know...if she has normal pulmonary and digestive functions, I don't think CF should be a huge concern.

I was actually diagnosed at age 5, mainly due to chronic GIT issues. Don't be so worried! Even if it is CF, the treatments today are absolutely wonderful. I'm currently 20 years old, and live a completely normal life. The only differences I've noticed is that I am a tiny person at 5'1" (which isn't completely bad), I have to take enzymes when I eat, and I a little sicker than most people during cold season. The media tends to lean towards horrible cases of CF, making it often sound a lot worse than it is (which really irritates me), and there really is a HUGE range of severity- a lot tending towards the mild.

My family has no actual CF history either, so I guess you never know. But truthfully, worrying never gets anybody anywhere!
