Try taking Mucinex. It's a long acting expectorant, and it will loosen the phlegm and help clear your chest.

If that doesn't work, I'd go see your doctor.

Well, I myself have asthma and I can tell you some of the symptoms that you might experience if you have it. - Shortness of breath, sometimes out of nowhere or when exercising and when you are scared or anxious - Pain in your chest sometimes in random moments (this is a sign that you need your inhaler and need to see a school nurse, if in school) - Chest congestion, when your chest has a slight bit of fluid or something when listened to by a stethoscope. It usually feels as if you have mucus in your chest - Wheezing is when you have to use extra force to get carbon dioxide out of your lungs. I do this right before an asthma attack. It sounds as if you are blowing air out of a slightly blocked straw. - Chest tightness is also something you should get used to if you have asthma. I have it 24/7. I can't get a deep breath at all and if you have it, you should see how much lung capacity you have by getting a peak flow test. If you have any of these symptoms, you should see your General Practioner about getting an inhaler and an asthma controlling medication.

If you are taking prescription asthma medications and still having problems, you need to see your doctor. You have inflamation of the airways if you are congested and the doctor will determine if you have viral infection or other reason your prescription is not working really well now.

Surveys show that roughly 50% of asthmatics use some form of unconventional therapy. Alternative treatments may be in addition to prescription medications.

there are many websites with Asthma information. I mostly use Wikipedia and Encyclopedia Britannica online.

Signs and symptoms
In some individuals asthma is characterized by chronic respiratory impairment. In others it is an intermittent illness marked by episodic symptoms that may result from a number of triggering events, including upper respiratory infection, stress, airborne allergens, or exercise.

An acute exacerbation of asthma is referred to as an asthma attack. The clinical hallmarks of an attack are shortness of breath (dyspnea) and either wheezing or stridor.

The airways of asthmatics are "hypersensitive" to certain triggers, also known as stimuli (see below). In response to exposure to these triggers, the bronchi (large airways) contract into spasm (an "asthma attack"). Inflammation soon follows, leading to a further narrowing of the airways and excessive mucus production, which leads to coughing and other breathing difficulties.

Yes, cut an onion; put the half next to your pillow. When you get short of breath, relax and breath slowly and deeply. Use lots of Vitamin C 2000 mg when you feel an attack. Take it before going to bed. Use Oil of Oregano and have a healthy diet. Avoid coffee, sodas, and diary and find out if you are allergic to foods. Use a vaporizer too. Use Oil of Oregano to boost up your immune system. See source for more info.

you can go to the physician to give you either:
mucolytics or expectorants to releave this mucus
or may be bronchodilator, e.g. salbutamol.

Don't take any medication without consulting a doctor.

One more thing to add to all these great answers: Don't sleep laying down. Use lots of pillows to prop yourself up in bed. This always works for me.

Try a vaporizer and put some Vick's Vapor rub in it if it is the kind that you can do that to. It should be one that uses heat to make the vapor.
