If you were concerned with animal rights do you really think that you would be eating them? I think not.

The main reason is that the vast majority of people do not have the room to raise their own livestock and even those that do, the cost per animal to raise is much more expensive than factory farming, which is why flesh products are so inexpensive at the grocery story. Factory farming does everything in large scale and with little regard for animal well being. They just need a product that is well enough and large enough to go to slaughter.
Raising animals humanely is costly.

My grandfather raised chickens, and he always chopped their heads off. I still remember the chicken flopping around in the dirt and blood spurting everywhere.
That's not a "harvest." That's killing, plain and simple, and don't try to sanitize it with a pretty word.
It's also part of the reason I don't eat meat and wouldn't consider raising animals for slaughter.

You shoot your chicken? That's weird. I thought you're supposed to use an ax. I would rather raise my own meat than eat meat from factory farms, but someone else would have to do the slaughtering because it's a pretty nasty business. Anyway I just have room for a cat and I don't think he'd taste very good.

If I'm concerned with the abolition of slavery i would not continue to keep slaves. Similarly if I don't believe animals should be the property of humans why would I raise my own animals?
Just a hint, if you substitute the words Animal Rights for Animal Welfare the question will actually make sense.

rediculous to kill a chicken with a shotgun ,just cut its throat
and i agree if you grow or raise ,meat ,it is good to eat it and you know what it was made with
we have always raised our own chickens ,pigs ,deer and guiny fowle in Africa ,and when you breed animals ,there always are excess males that have to be culled ,the female being kept for breeding more and more.
it is morally not justified anymore to hunt.
the world has gone through a lot of diminishing natural changes in the last 50 years ,and we are witness to the first mass extinction ,since the dinosaurs

I'd grow too attatched to the animal and wouldn't be able to kill it. It'd be like (I'm going to assume you have an animal) killing your (insert animal here), I don't think it would be that easy for you to do.
I'll stick to not eating animals...thanks :)

you said you shoot your chickens in the head.and they dont feel it.
actually if you were into animal rights you would know that, they can still feel it after you shoot them.
their nerves are still working, and they can feel that have of them are missing.
