Just answered this question for someone with head lice. Here is part of my best answer:
Head lice have legs with claws that grip and hold onto the hair shaft. They are dirty white or grayish in color. Head lice almost always occur on the head where they attach their eggs to the hair while body lice prefer to live in the seams and linings of unwashed clothing, blankets and sheets from which they periodically crawl onto the skin to feed.
Crab lice live only on the hairy portions of the body. Their legs are adapted to grasp hairs which are rather widely spaced, and for this reason, these lice prefer the pubic and perianal regions. However, they can be found in eyelashes, head and arm pit hair.
So to answer your question, as above it's possible to have crabs in other areas such as eyelashes, armpit hair but is unlikely because of the different shape/thickness of the hair shaft. If either of you are black, it's more likely as the hair is coarser, thicker and curlier, more like pubic hair. So, you can shave if you like, but you need a special cream for crablice from the MD, don't buy the stuff at the drugstore, it's made for heads and may hurt your tender genital skin. You can go to planned parenthood or a community clinic, most are subsidized well for reproductive health/STDs and have sliding scales or free services. If you can't afford a doctor visit and cream, check out natural remedies like neem oil, google "neem oil lice" and you'll get tons of info, it's non-toxic, natural, relatively cheap and safe to use for anyone of any age. Smells horrible though, rather like burnt onions and motor oil - so be prepared.
However you treat it, make sure you wash your bedding and towels too or the bugs may return. After the initial treatment shave and retreat areas again in 7-10 days to kill any remaining nits that may have hatched. Then you should be crablice free!

The only thing shaving will do is make the situation even itchier, and will NOT get rid of the little critters. I understand your financial situation, but you need to somehow come up with the money for the cream. If you don't treat with the cream that kills them, the critters will be with you for quite awhile. Once you attain the cream, treat yourself and your friend as the label states. During the course of treatment be sure to wash all clothes and bedding in HOT water until the treatment is finished. If cleanliness and good hygiene are not followed closely there is a very high chance of reinfestation.

Women are now shaving it all off, ( as bald as a child). Take a peek at the new porn flicks and you`ll notice the lack public hair. It`s disgusting. If you`re a grown women and you have pubic hair, maybe you should leave some there. Not to mention some men are now complaining and they want their partners to look like women instead of children. I don`t know why every piece of body hair has to be removed?
