As a vegetarian, I ask this:
1) What wines (red/white - be specific by type as well) go well with vegetables?
and
2) What wines are good with tofu? Drinking, not cooking wines mind you.

Thanks!
:)

As a vegetarian, wine choice is pretty limited. Many (almost all) are fined using either gelatin, isinglass or chitin, all of which are sourced from dead animals. (Of course there are no laws to say you can't have them - eat and drink what you want - but to stay within the excepted "rules" of being vegetarian most wines are off the list.) That said, there are vegetarian wines available, they just may take a bit of hunting down.

Here is a list of wines which are approved by the Vegetarian Society: http://www.seedlingshowcase.com/db/category.asp?id=Food+%2D+Wines+%26+Fortified+Wines Unfortunately, the VS is UK based, so many of these wines are unlikely to be available outside the UK. Hopefully, there will be at least a few of them available where you are though.

I am not much of a wine drinker so I cannot really advise on what to drink with what. I'd say try a few different ones and see which you like best with your favourite meals :)

This is an awesome website to match wines with particular foods.

Also, I am not sure how veggie you are, but many wines use eggs. Also some use fish parts for filtering, so some aren't drinkable by any vegetarians.

I find a dry Riesling stands up to even the heartiest vegetables. Also for lighter reds try a Malbec or Red Zin. And to play it safe just get a chardonnay.

As a vegan, I respond by pointing out that alcohol isn't necessary. Although you might try adding a small splash of dry red wine to a pot of tomato sauce or a bit of Saki to miso soup, but each if great without that addition.
