I once bought an ungutted mackerel and proceeded to do it myself - and freaked out! I literally screamed the place down and my neighbours thought there was murder going on! It was moving!!

I immediately took it back to the fish counter of the big store that I bought it from and was reassured that it was perfectly safe to eat and that worms in fish such as mackerel was common but the worms were confined to the gut.

I did not want to take my chances and got my money back - and a bunch of flowers.

I have since eaten mackerel and many other fish and the fact that I am answering this is a proof that I am still alive to tell the tale!!!

So. I think sushi is safe.

Worms that are in raw fish are in sushi IF you use that fish. The worms are visible and the fish should be cleaned thoroughly before making sushi so there is NO chance of them being in the sushi.

I've found some in London Sushi restaurant food-more than 1 place -though I'm sure hygiene is better in Sushi abroad. Dead or alive, chopped or whole, I don't like eating worms.

Of course, not!

I'm Japanese and my dad buys a whole fish to make sashimi ( slices of fish). He slices the fish very carefully and remove the stuff that doesn't taste good.

Anyway, are you kidding me? Do you think people serve the kind of stuff at sushi restaurants or do you think when sushi chefs or people who slice fish can't recognize the disgusting worms? If they don't recognize it, they are probably not Japanese or well trained sushi chefs.

This depends on which part of the world you live in.

In the US, the FDA "grades" the fish by taking a core sample.
"Sushi" grade is the highest grade possible, and consequently
the most expensive. Still, as much as love sushi, I will only order it from reputable Japanese restaurants.

There is a possibility and that's why raw fish should be absolutely fresh (there's no way for customers to know this); so I trust only the Japanese themselves to prepare sushi because of their uncompromising high standards in every aspect of food & kitchen hygiene: storage, handling, preparation, cooking.

Probably not because the worms are usually in the guts of the fish which are removed before eating (generally). It is only the flesh of fish which is consumed.

Generally not in sushi-grade fish.

It's OK..In Sushi, the worms get chopped up with the fish so they're not alive to harm you.
