Go to an Asian market and browse around. What you described could be BBQ pork. It's almost always coated with a red sauce. Better yet, call your ex-bf and ask him what it was and where he got it.

I would say BBQ pork since you sound like you are in the US which is common, but that's sweet not spicy. It could be a dish called Hui Guo Ruo which means meat returned to the pot, a little sweet from the frying but spicy from the pepper. Its cut in slices. If it was something that his family fixed then that's a real possibility but just ask him.

i admire quite spiced nutrition. i only made some habenro, jalapeno, banana and pequin chili peppers with tomatio. im ingesting it with ribeye roast i only grilled and end it in the oven. burned my pinky finger, nonetheless hurting
