If you've got the money for it Paul Newman's brand is really good also but not worth the extra money IMO.
French's or McCormick's puts out a spaghetti sauce packet that you add your own tomato paste too. That turns out really tangy and tasty. A girlfriend I once dated was of Italian descent and she and her mother used those packets to make spaghetti sauce for Chicken cachatori (Sp?) and spaghetti with meatballs.
The packets are sold where the gravy packets are displayed and are pretty easy to fix. My ex GF and her mother only used Contindina (Sp?) tomato paste, they were very serious about only that brand too!

Here is the secret. Pick any of the better brands, Prego or Rago are fine. But, an here is the secret, add one tablespoon of granulated sugar, one table spoon of tomato past and three coves of dices garlic.
*** all the ingredients, cook on high heat, stirring constantly with a wood or plastic cooking spoon until the sauced has reduced by at least a third. Serve a really cheap Chianti and some very crusty bread (Not garlic bread).
My Italian wife fools her mother.

I think they are all about the same as a basic start. You can buy a can of Hunts or similar for around a dollar. Get the no added sugar one.
You should add some parmesan cheese (NOT the green can) and some garlic, onion, mushroom, etc. Whatever you like.
Home made sauce isn't that difficult. There are also canned tomatoes on the market that don't have a lot of added salt you can start with.

I'm half italian and even the italian side of my family admits to using Rao's sauces when they don't have time to cook. Rao's is SOO good. It's made in NYC and exported around the US so it can be a tad bit pricey (but not really...) You can get it at places like the Fresh Market and Earthfare, but Super Target or supermarkets sometimes sell it too.
I recommend: Vodka and Arrabiata sauces-they're the yummiest.

None because the American sauces are all loaded with sugar and corn syrups. They are much too sweet. Newman's Own, Ragu, Prego all have about 11g of sugar. Emeril's has corn syrup, AND high fructose corn syrup.
American's can't taste it because 99% of the foods they eat are sugary so they're used to highly sweetened salsa, pasta sauce, ketchup, cereals, etc but people who don't eat this crap find it disgusting.

Newman's Own (the Paul Newman sauce) is pretty good. I don't know that someone from an Italian family would say it tasted "authentic" but I like it.
