A pelvic examiner looks for physical abnormalities in the cervix unterus, and ovarian tubes. They do this by 'feeling.' They can also rule in or out where pain or problems are coming from by where it hurts during the exam. Tests are take in a routine PAP for abnormal cells, as in cancer, or pre-cancer. STD = sexually transmitted disease. When they do an exam, they look at the cervix to check for abnormalities also. Hope this helps

It's imp to do pelvic exam and pap smear(collection of cells from cervix and send for laboratory to see if there is abnormal cells which may indicate infection or warning of cancer ) as a part of routine check.
You'll want to be sure you're developing normally.
to prevent pregnancy or infection. If you have ever had sex, you are probably going to need a pelvic exam. Girls should have a pelvic exam before having sex to discuss methods of birth control and preventing sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).
to deal with a problem. There may be a number of concerns that lead to a pelvic exam. For example, if you have problems with your periods, missed periods, pain, signs of infection, and worries about development, it's a good idea to see a doctor.

There are three types of pelvic ultrasound:
* abdominal (transabdominal)
* vaginal (transvaginal, endovaginal) for women
* rectal (transrectal) for men
In men and women, a pelvic ultrasound exam can help identify:
* kidney stones
* tumors
* other disorders in the urinary bladder
In women, a pelvic or abdominal ultrasound is most often performed to evaluate the:
* bladder
* ovaries
* uterus
* cervix
* fallopian tubes
Pelvic ultrasound exams are also used to monitor the health and development of an embryo or fetus during pregnancy.
Ultrasound examinations can help diagnose symptoms experienced by women such as:
* pelvic pain
* abnormal bleeding
* other menstrual problems
and help identify:
* palpable masses such as ovarian cysts and uterine fibroids
* ovarian or uterine cancers
A transvaginal ultrasound is usually performed to view the endometrium or the lining of the uterus, including its thickness and any associated ovarian abnormality. Transvaginal ultrasound also affords a good way to evaluate the muscular walls of the uterus, called the myometrium. Hysterosonography allows for a more in-depth investigation of uterine cavity. These exams are typically performed to detect:
* uterine anomalies
* scars
* polyps
* fibroids
* cancer, especially in patients with abnormal uterine bleeding
Some physicians also use hysterosonography for patients with infertility.
In men, a pelvic or abdominal ultrasound is used to evaluate the:
* bladder
* seminal vesicles
The transrectal ultrasound, a special study of the prostate gland, involves attaching the transducer to a probe and inserting it into a man's rectum.
Doppler ultrasound images can help the physician to see and evaluate:
* blockages to blood flow (such as clots)
* narrowing of vessels (which may be caused by plaque)
* tumors and congenital malformation
The Pap smear can detect cancerous or precancerous conditions of the cervix. Abnormal values are based on the test results. The current system of reporting divides the results into three main areas: benign (noncancerous), precancerous (showing some abnormal cell changes), and malignant (possibly cancerous).

I agree with "nickname", who gave the best answer. Paps don't test for STDs, STD tests are for that. The Pap will show abnormal cervical cells and abnormal changes to the cervix which may ultimately be due to an STD.
