The first time I took Metformin, my blood sugar levels went into the high 300's. Is this normal? I called the pharmacist and he said it was not working. Going to see my doctor this week. I d/c the Metformin , now anxious to see what my doctor says about this. I have been controling my DM better with diet than meds. Anyone have this experience.

It is my understanding that with metformin it takes weeks for it to really work. It works with the liver to build a wall so the liver doesn't release any extra sugar. When we discovered I was diabetic my family doctor prescribed this drug that day, after 5 days I had seen my sugar going up not down, so he told me it would take almost a month. (now also understand I was a type 1 but my doctor misdiagnosed me as a type 2 it wasn't until I went to an endocrinologist later that week that I found out it was type1, but even he said metformin takes a while to work on type 2's. My blood sugars were in the 300-500 range when the dumb doctor just keep giving me pills in 10 days time he wrote Rx's for 5 different pills needless to say i haven't gone to him since when I hit the 682 mark that's when I called the local endocrinologist thankfully my insurance didn't require my family doctors approval )

Rather metformin works for you has nothing to do with your weight. I have known many people (both thin and heavy) with DM that took metformin with excellent results, I am one of those people. I took it for approximately 10 years and it worked well for me, then one day it just quit working. I took Glucotrol XL for a while, then that also quit working. Then Amaryl...I'm now on insulin. On the flipside I've known many people (both thin and heavy) that it did not work for. It sounds as if you just need to try another class of medicine. Oral diabetes meds work in one of two ways, they either cause you to produce more insulin or they help you to use the insulin that you already make. Metformin works by helping you use your insulin, so maybe you need one of the other classes of meds.
Definitely talk to your doctor about it, not all medicines work for all people. There are several reasons that this particular drug may not have worked for you and no one can answer that but your doctor.

I came to know about metformin when doctor gave this drug to me for treating polycystic ovaries. 2 years later I asked the clarification from doctor about it because, I was having continuous headache, dizziness, nausea immediately after taking metformin. I would just faint at times. The doctor told me it was used for diabetes but also given for polycystic. She said that it had these side effect that the blood sugar can either shoot (even when you are not diabetic) or it can decrease below normal. Plus continuous use of it negative effect your kidney and liver. As a result it causes them to work inefficiently, leading to constipation.I discontinued and I am perfect now. I am doing Reiki Healing, Pranic Healing, meditation and Pranayama regularly.
So if your blood sugar level shooted up please tell the doctor and request him to put you on some other medication.
before jumping on to conclusion, take a note of your blood sugar levels fasting and 2 hrs after breakfast, for at least 1 week. Without metformin and with metformin. You will know from the results if metformin is causing it or you are generally high.

I am writing to tell you what an incredible impact these methods had on my life! I have had type 2 diabetes for 27 years. For me, the worst part of this horrible disease is the severe pain I constantly get in my feet. The pain is so bad that I avoid standing and walking as much as possible. I've got to tell you that within the first month, my feet stopped hurting altogether and I can now walk totally pain free.

Believe it or not, I even danced at my niece's wedding last month, something I have not done in a many years. I've been following the book for six months now and my blood sugar is well within normal range. I feel great!

I recommend you use the Type 2 Diabetes Destroyer to naturally reverse your diabetes.

Metformin does not stimulate insulin production from pancreas. It increases cellular transport of insulin by opening more receptors. If your body has inherent insulin but it`s not reaching cells due to obesity or lack of exercise Metformin works. Otherwise it can not.
Metformin work only in overweight diabetics.

You apparently did not control your diet on metformin according to what you said. Pharmacists do not treat patients. You should have contiued your medicine with diet.
