Depending upon the kind of exercise you perform, also with regard to intensity and regularity, you may see an increase or decrease in blood pressure. With aerobic or cardiovascular exercise, there is normally a decrease in blood pressure. This is more applicable if the exercise intensity is controlled so that the exercise is considered on the lower end of the aerobic scale. Part of this appears to be due to not only how the body functions, but the effects of exercise on stress reduction. Exercise on the high end of the aerobic scale, 80-90% of target heart rate range for example, does not appear to have a stress reduction effect, If you are exercising as part of an overall program to reduce your blood pressure, it is essential that you interact with your physician and supervising health professional to determine and monitor your exercise intensity.

Resistance or weight training is normally associated with increases in blood pressure if the exercise has a high "isometric" or holding component. In isometrics, you get the muscle to a certain position, and with a force that you can't move, try as hard as possible to move it, essentially exerting muscular force without movement. This type of weight training has a definite negative effect on blood pressure. However, conventional resistance training with a moderate resistance, where you move the weight through a full range of motion does not have the same result on increasing blood pressure. If you are hypertensive, or unsure about the effect of resistance training or any exercise program on your blood pressure, first consult with your personal physician to determine the appropriateness of any exercise and exercise level.

Blood pressure can fluctuate with a number of factors, it is important you standardize the way in which you measure your blood pressure. For example, after exercise or a large meal, your blood pressure is going to be significantly different than upon waking first thing in the morning. During the workday, it is completely normal for blood pressure to rise as stress or excitement build. Because of these factors, systolic pressure, the first number can change during the day by up to 50 points, so it is important to control as many factors as possible to get accurate readings. When taking your blood pressure, observe the following guidelines to assure that your measurements are as accurate as possible:

Alcohol and caffeine will change blood pressure readings, so avoid taking measurements after taking products which contain either caffeine or alcohol. o Smoking, eating and exercise all will change blood pressure measurements, so if any of these conditions apply, wait for a minimum of 30 minutes before measurement.

As exercise has different effects for different people, you may need to wait longer than 30 minutes after vigorous exercises for your body to return to a normal resting state where the measurement will be more accurate.

I took mine about 30 minutes after a Zumba class (I had done some heavy bench press before that, and a bootcamp type of class for about 2.5 hours of total exercise) and I was 166/143 pulse 76 (Stage 2 Hypertension). I waited a few minutes and breathed calmly and it changed to 128/106 pulse 72 which is still Stage 2 Hypertension. I waited until the morning, a full 8 hours later and got 123/61 pulse 73 which is Pre-Hypertension. I have been working out a lot lately and eat only baked chicken and salad, with coconut and edamame as my carb. Last year I was at 90/50 which is the good range. I ve always been active, but could my recent increase in activity and growing muscles/at burn increased my blood pressure?

I am doctor, 24 years old and I have had hypertension when I was 18, then 20 & even today at times, my BP can go as high as 160/110mm of Hg. Now, what I suppose is that you have the same problem that I had, its called white coat hypertension. This means that you fear the white coat( doctor) and as soon as the sphygmanometer cuff is tightened o your arm, you become nervous and your heart beat rises, you try to keep calm and show as if you are normal but the heart pumps aggressively and the result is high reading. On taking multiple readings, the arm constricts and makes your more tensed making it going high and high. If you have this type of hypertension, then it is due to anxiety, as you keep thinking that this BP is high. You need to relax , instead of putting pressure on your left ventricle of the heart by exercising( lifting weights, if you are doing). Make your vessels a little loose. the secret is having long walks. Get up early morning and go for a walk for at least 30 minutes, you will see that your BP will be reduced as long as you start doing this. You might be taking Amlodepine, which is a calcium channel blocker and it is good as it will keep your heart relaxed. High BP is not just a problem for Airforce, it is a life threatening disease and has no symptoms, unless and until organ damage is done. The right ventricle of the heart becomes stiff and hypertropic causing a fatal disease called HOCM(hyper obstructive cardiomyopathy). It can burst the blood vessels in brain and cause stroke. So, I recommend the following to you as I have also done the same. 1. start long walks 2. Keep cool, no matter what happens. 3.Take less sodium( as it retains water and increases venous BP) and take potassium ( it works as a diuretic and removes excess water but use wisely as too much potassuim can stop the heart). 4. Foods god in potassium are banana and honey, so eat one banana and honey every day. 5. Do yoga to calm your body and soul. 6. Never feel frustrated and keep a regular check on BP. 7. If still it is high and is not responding to medications, then go for a MRI and aldosterone urine test as this can be due to small tumors on the adrenal glands or high levels of aldostrone which raises the BP. Now, how to take the right BP measurement? Relax for 15 minutes at least and then take your BP( or ask some one else to take it). Sit on a chair up right and straight, keep the cuff of your arm on the level of your heart and cool yourself by thinking of something else and taking long breaths. Now, the record the BP in both hands and the one which has greater is the right BP reading. Go for echocardiogarphy test , to see how much damage this high BP has done to left ventricle and if there is any leakage in any valve as that can also cause high BP. Also, go for renal vessel colour doppler to see if there is any blockage or constriction in the kidneys causing high BP. When you are done, you 'll know the underlying cause and if nothing is found, which is in 95% cases, then it is called essential or idiopathic hypertension ( due to unknown reasons) and should be managed by exercises and medication. Remember, if you will remain anxious and tensed even during the 24 hour holter monitoring, then it will also yield bad results. So, calm yourself and then go for that test.

Chances are you're eating too fast. Try holding a conversation while having a meal so you're not necessarily gulping down more than you need to feel full.
