The oldest person that I know with CF is 52. He still looks pretty good. We transplant a lot of people with CF at our hospital, but I like it better when we can keep them off the transplant list.

there are many genetic mutations found within the gene for cystic fibrosis (over 1000 now). There are 6 groupings of how these mutations affect the protein function and the patient phenotypically (the symptoms and degree of disease). if your boyfriend has the classic gene mutation (called delta F508) then the average age is around 36-40. i found a couple of sites on the internet claiming the oldest people have been 65 to 88. i would take that with a grain of salt because it does not mention what type of mutations these people had. some mutations lead to much less severe disease than delta f508.

overall though, take care of him, and make sure he stays on top of taking care of himself, especially in terms of his pulmonary hygeine (mucus clearance, inhalers, antibiotics, nutrition, exercise, etc.). Living with chronic disease of any sort is challenging and, at times, frustrating, but, in the end, rewarding. I have many patients in their 20s to 30s with families and children of their own. I wish you luck.

Average life span is 30 years. I'm not aware of the oldest recorded.

Scientific breakthroughs happen every day, just remember that much. :)

I found a very helpful website.
