I have been getting canker sores lately, and I went to the doctor here at my university. The doctor said that canker sores are caused by herpes, however research that I did on the internet says that canker sores have nothing to do with herpes.

canker sores are usually caused by poor oral hygiene, and a lack of nutrition. Herpes can cause canker sores, but not all canker sores are a result of herpes. herpetic lesions usually occur outside the mouth on the lips face and nostrils, while all canker sores, by definition, occur inside the mouth on the mucous membranes. Start using an antibacterial mouthwash and get some good multivitamins.(liquid are best)

Canker sores and Herpes cold sores are completely unrelated.

My BABY brother used to get canker sores ALL the time because he refused to let us brush his teeth and he ate crispy things all the time, so the scratches on his gums would get infected. At two years old, there was NO way he could have been infected with Herpes I or II!

The doctor you saw was a COMPLETE MORON.

The best treatment for them is to brush them with tooth paste (and it will hurt like HELL!), then take a Q-Tip dipped in red wine and dab at the sore 3-4x a day. No kidding! It does work...its what the doctor told us to do with my brother and its what I do on the rare occasions I get one, so I know it works!

Good luck...and don't go back to that stupid "doctor." He might end up killing you!

a canker sore describes an ulcer like sore. Canker sores are mostly caused by HSV I virus. (Herpes) Unless you have been exposed to the HSV II virus which just means it will occur more frequently. HSV I is usually oral in nature with fewer occurances. There is a test called Herpes IGG and IGM that will tell you what type you have. They are both very contagious and dont' kiss any babies or other people because they might get it.

If it is cracking in the corners of the mouth it is an iron or zinc deficiency.....

No canker sores are not the same as cold sores. Canker sores are on the inside of your mouth and are related to a type of strep germ and maybe eating too much acidy foods (tomatoes, OJ, pickles, soda pop, vinegar, etc). Cold sores are on the outside lip area and are caused by herpes. They break out in times of stress.

Canker sores are NOT a form of herpes simplex. Some claim the cause is unkown while others say it is a product of diet, stress, hormonal changes, food allergies, immune defense systems. Canker sores are not contagious, unlike the herpes virus. You were right, listen to yourself!

They are related viruses, but not at all the same. Research is still on the fence about whether or not Canker is even contagious. Some researches say that it is, but most agree that it is not.
Your doctor was not wrong, but didn't explain it the way he should have.

Don't use any mouthwash or salt water or anything like that until your canker sore is gone. The best medicine for getting rid of them is your body's own fluids (saliva).

Still brush and floss! Just don't go crazy with mouthwash.

Canker sores and herpes (cold sores) are not connected in any way. Herpes is contagious, canker sores are not.
