What is the origin of the word stroke, as in a person who suffers a stroke?

I think the word stroke is a synonym of apoplexy. Taken from the Greek, apoplexy means to be STRUCK down as in a seizure. See this website for a full explanation.

As a speech pathologist I found this a very interesting question.

other word for stroke is CVA(cerebral vascular accident).
