Depends on the kind of party. But I'd say the hostess greets people at the door, introduces them to the person of honor, shows them the buffet and where the beverages are, gets things from the kitchen, making sure the kitchen runs smoothly, directs people to the bathroom if they ask, keeps beverages stocked, and generally make sure everything runs right so the person of honor can mingle with the invitees and not have to worry. Think of it being like being a personal assistant.

That really doesnt make sense- you are really only the host or hostess if the party is at your house, or if you are giving the party. If you are not, you arent the host or hostess, and are probably stepping on someone else's toes. Anyway, I think the main things to expect would be friendliness, a welcoming attitude, and a clean and comfortable place to gather in. Thats about it.

A host or hostest should be unobtrusive, yet know what's going on, making sure that food is where it should be, that someone's glass is never empty, that the wallflower is introduced to some nice folks to talk to, that the obnoxious overachiever and scene grabber is kept busy helping in the kitchen, that each person is made to feel at home and comfortable, that a smile is something to be shared and laughter comes freely.
