I asked some Persian friends and they didn't know what houmus meant, but I thought it was eaten across the Middle East. Does anyone know if it is eaten or sold in Iran? The word is Arabic (not Greek), and is spelled حُمُّص. It is not a Greek dish, as commonly believed, but a Middle Eastern one. Perhaps it has a different name in Farsi. I'm planning to live in Iran for six months and I need good vegetarian foods to eat while there.

If you don't know what houmus is, see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hummus

Does anyone know what it's called in Persian? Is it just called homos or does it have a separate Farsi name?

In response to "Everett H", your answer has nothing to do with humus. What do you mean "assuming" I'm "telling the truth". My period of time abroad is a compulsory part of my degree program, so yes, I am telling the truth.

What do you mean am I going to go around Iran spouting Republican dogma? I'm not a Republican and have no interest in oil. I happen to be English, and have many Iranian friends and will not cause any problems in Iran. I have never said such things as you suggest, anywhere!!!

The persian restaurants that I have been to (here in America) have plenty of vegetarian foods. They do serve houmus, but that may be a by product of Americans thinking its a middle eastern food. The persians eat plenty of rice and egg plant dishes, so you should be good to go.

I've never had humus with Iranian foods, though you can probably find it there. There are hundreds of vegetarian dishes to eat. You should get a cookbook and look over the recipes to familiarize yourself with the dishes and names.

Yes, Iranians and mideasterners eat hummous. It is a spread made with ground chickpeas, olive oil and spices. Look on the internet to see if they have it in Iran, and I'm sure you'll find that they do. I've had it in Israel and it's delicious. Nowadays, you can buy all types of flavors of hummous in the supermarkets.

humus is not a persian dish, and i learned it from arab people.
you need a blender to make it easy. put a drained can of gorbanzo bean in blender, add olive oil and salt and pepper to your taste and fresh lemon juice and blend until you reach the consistency you love. in iran there are good breads to use with. I doubt if you can find tahini which is the paste they use in humus. usually i don't add tahini, and there is no problem to me!
also you can find persian vg dishes, you need to learn the names and give try to see if you like them: such as: koo koo sabzi, borani, variety of soups called ASH,haleem bademjan. you can bye a persian cook book on amazon.com to familiar yourself with dishes. you can find different kind of restaurant over there, i believe there is one vegeterian restaurant too!!! good luck
i am sure you 'll like your trip.enjoy it.

IRANIANS DO NOT EAT HOUMUS!!!! ARABS DO. Do ask those persian freaks what houmus is, they won't know. Go ask an Arab.
