A nodule is usually a small, round shadow seen on chest x-ray anywhere in the lungs. A 2 to 3 mm nodule is very small. The smaller the nodule, the less likely it is to be cancer. You should get your previous chest x-rays so they can be compared with the most recent. If this nodule was on a previous chest x-ray taken 2 or more years ago and is unchanged, no further testing is needed.

Nodules are due to infections, inflammation, or tumors. It’s possible for the pneumonia to cause a nodule directly from the infection itself or indirectly by the infection causing inflammation. A granuloma is a nodule of inflammation that can occur in any area of the body.

First of all a lung nodule does not mean it is cancer. If your friends nodule was found on a chest x-ray it needs to be followed with a CT with contrast (CAT SCAN) then it will be followed every 6 months and if there is no change it will then go to once a year follow up. If it changes then your friend will need to see a lung specialist.
I work in radiology and there are people just like your friend with lung nodules that never change. The most important thing is to have it followed. A CT with contast is important. A CT can see so much more than a chest x-ray. The contrast is iodine in an IV in the arm and it will "light up" all the vessels. Just let your friend know this is not the end of the world just STAY ON TOP OF IT!!!!

My sister had a nodule on her left lung. Found on chest x-ray. She then had a CT scan with contrast, it also showed the nodule and the pulmonologist then had her to get a PET scan. The nodule was still there and showed some activity. He scheduled her for a biopsy. She went to have that and during the procedure her lung collapsed which is very common, so they were unable to do the biopsy. So surgery was then scheduled. When the surgeon got in there, the spot was no longer there. Most nodules are nothing to worry about. But you should have a CT scan and or PET scan to be sure.

Modern thoracic (lung) surgery can now be done with laproscopic robotic surgery in which only a probe needs to be inserted into the lung to reach the nodule. A cancer test is made on the spot and a decision is made whether to remove the nodule. I personally attended an open house at the robotic surgery hospital facility below and can recommend their robotic lung surgery doctors whole heartedly.
