I have been taking Lantus for oh, about 2 years and my doctor just recently told me (after telling me I was very overweight 180 at 5'3") that Lantus could be the cause of the weight gain. He said that the main side effect shown from Lantus was weight gain, which was more prevelant than with other standard insulins.

He then suggested I look into taking Levemir because studies for it have shown actual weight loss. The reason why it promotes weight loss is kind of unknown but anyway..

I was just wondering if anyone had switched and if they lost any weight (or noticed any other differences). Thanks!

I started out on Lantus, but when I injected it would burn at the injection site, so my Dr. switched me to Levemir, no more burning and I haven't lost weight since I've been on it. I feel fine being on Levemir too so I would say at least try it to see how it makes you feel.

I take lantus (i am a type 1- i have never been over weight until I started lantus 3 years ago now I am 160 and 5' 3" I was 130 ish) I know a teenage boy that switched from lantus to levemir and he loves it. I don't know anything about weight changes for him, He is just a thin 14 year old boy. I have a type 1 friend that was allergic to lantus but can take levemir, but she too is just thin-real thin. I look forward to finding out, If this is true I will ask my endocrinologist about switching. He is weird about switching stuff. 3 years ago when I asked to go the novolog from R he said okay but no more switches, he is just old and set in his ways.

I added Levemir about a year ago in addition to Novolog and I have lost weight but I attributed it to starting to baby sit my 3 granddaughters. Could be a combination of the two, though. I didn't get good results when I took Lantus several years ago but I don't think there was weight gain involved.. I just seem to fluctuate between 125lb. and 140 lb. Right now I am at 127lb. I really think the baby sitting is the main cause for it, though.

A 2011 study review found no significant difference in the safety or effectiveness of Levemir versus Lantus for type 2 diabetes. They’re both absorbed slowly over a 24-hour period. They’re similar in a number of other ways as well.Levemir and Lantus are long-acting forms of injectable insulin that are both used in the treatment of type 1 and type 2 diabetes. They can be prescribed to children and adults.Levemir is a solution of insulin detemir, while Lantus is a solution of insulin glargine. Both are basal insulin formulas, meaning blood sugar levels are lowered more slowly but are longer lasting.
