I've been told by two people that just because you're smelling it, doesn't mean you're breathing it. Talk about denial! I have never
smoked (never felt I needed to) and yes, it's so much harder to breathe around them. They do, in fact, desensitize themselves to the odor.

Among other things, smoking can damage your sense of smell and taste. When I was a smoker, I also didn't like the smell of smoke on or around me. I would smoke outside, never indoors. Hated going to bars where is was really smoky. Always carried fabric spray with me to kill the smell when I did smoke.

Some smokers don't mind the smell, others do. I think it's just a matter of personal preference.

Actually yes. I used to smoke, unfortunately, a couple years ago, and I could never smell smoke on my clothes or around me at all. The moment I quit smoking, my smell started coming back, and it got to the point that I finally realized how badly smoke sticks to your clothes, skin, hair, and the air around you. It's horrible. And very hazardous to your health. When you smoke, your nose is actually desensitized to just about every smell, because the smoke deadens the smell receptors in your nose. hope that helped. Have an awesome day!! :)

I think there is some truth to that. I quit smoking for new years and now I can smell someone smoking from a mile away. Went to a bar last weekend and was disgusted by how i smelled when I left.

well, I smoke and so does my husband. He smokes a lot more than me though, and sometimes, the smell of his smoke gets to me. Even he has said, (he is 2 packs a day) that no one, smoker or not, likes second hand smoke. It's just nasty no matter where its coming from.

No - they hate the smell of smoke as much as a non-smoker does. Stale cigatette smoke is the worst smell on earth - dirty ashtrays are revolting - and I am a smoker - worse luck

People who smoke do lose the sense of smell. Two-pack-a-day smokers must quit for as many years as they smoked to completely restore their sense of smell.

we get desensitised to any smell after a while eg air fresheners, can't smell them after a couple of days but other people coming into the house say what a nice smell. perfume wearers use more and more because they can't smell the perfume anymore. Not sure what the mechanism is though

Sense of smell and taste are dulled in smokers. Some say so is their commen sense, since they certainly lack good judgement in continuing with a habit that is known to cause cancer.
