Is it true? I love poppyseed dressing and heard that you would test positive for drugs? I don't work for anyone, self employed, just wondered if I needed to fire myself!

IT IS TRUE!!!!!!! The tests for opiates are INSANELY sensitive!!!

A major part of my income is related to some high security areas (and NO I won't get more specific than that) so I have to take those tests frequently. With my Czech background I love(d) poppyseed Kolaches. I lost a contract when I failed one of those tests! After consulting with council and taking daily tests until all the poppyseed was gone we did a test ala Mythbusters that Lillyian referenced. It only took 14 poppyseeds for me to fail the test!!! I no longer eat ANYTHING with poppyseed. It's way to costly a mistake for me to make!

My dad's a psychiatrist and he works at a prison, so occasionally he gets drug tested, and he does avoid poppyseeds for that specific reason.

Poppies grown for their seeds ARE in the same family as the kind grown for opium, after all. Obviously, you can't get high off poppyseed dressing, but it might confuse a drug test.

Also, read the below Wikipedia article.

It is in fact true that you can test false positive for opiates up to 48 hours after consuming poppy seeds. Check out the Snopes site (urban legends). Prisoners for example are not allowed to consume poppy seed products because of that nor are they permitted to do so while on furlough or on probation.
So there ya go.
I guess you need to go to rehab.
See if you have a company policy that permits you to pay for the help you need and the retraining. That way you do not need to fire yourself.

Got to agree with both the answers above. These are recreational drugs, not performance enhancing ones. But Rahul Sharma had actually said that he would quit cricket, if found guilty. His quote is going to haunt him now. With Harbhajan already in the probables list, without merit IMO, he might get in, as Rahul would be shown the door for some time, for indulging in a rave party..

YES! It is true. I saw it on Mythbusters.

I am not sure if you have ever seen the show but they scientifically try to disprove/prove myths and urban legends.

They tried this and used the type of tests most corporations would use, and they came up positive every time!

If you eat a lot of poppy seeds, yes, you can test positive for opiates. That's because opium itself is the processed sap of the seedpod of some varieties of the poppy flower. And all other opiates and opioids are either derivatives or synthetic versions of the derivatives of opium.

However, a single serving of poppy seed dressing won't trigger any type of alarms, unless you're allergic to it.
