At first I became vegetarian for health and beauty reasons. I read somewhere that John Leguizamo, the Mexican American actor, went on a vegetables-and-fruit-only diet for a few months to get in shape for a movie in which he played a transvestite. He noticed that his skin improved its texture, and that his weight went down fast. I thought I'd try it so that I could get rid of pesky adult acne.
Within a year into becoming vegetarian, however, I noticed that I felt more compassionate towards animals, and truly believed that they have as much right to live as we humans do, and we have no right to take their lives to feed ourselves. Killing them for food is barbaric, it's not for higher-evolved beings like humans. I was even inspired to get a pet dog (or to give the dog a human), something which I haven't done for 30 years.
With research, I found that being vegetarian is environment-friendly, too, which works very well for me, and that it is anti-hunger. Someone answered earlier that if all the grains now being fed to cattle, livestock, and poultry are fed directly to humans, we will eliminate hunger from the face of the earth. (I got this from "Diet for a Small Planet" by Frances Moore Lappe.)
These are my reasons. I'm sure you will find them sensible, too.

Health was the start. Dad had 4 bypass before age 50. More I learned about the health and animal issues the less I wanted to eat meat.

I am not a vegetarian but this is a very good reason to be one and has made me consider it more than once. If every field of corn that is used to fatten up livestock for slaughter and distribution as meat products was switched to a field to grow corn to feed humans, the product would be enough to easily feed every person in the world. I wish i could give a source, but i read it in a book that i cant recall. However if you just think about all the cows and pigs that are farmed in this country it is not beyond belief

many reasons, health was then a major concern i had balloned up & i wanted to feel better & look better. Have u ever seen a industrialized chicken house, it is discusting. & a pig farm. or waht about a slaughter house.....The government should ration meat....less people would be sick.....who stays healthy & lives long only one three kinds of animal meat....ok right fish are there but the mainland farms polutes the waters the fish are in. but mostly because i use less life force & that makes my karma better then everyone that feeds on others. j/k

Animal rights but on a very personal level. I would never expect anyone else to conform to my standards, I can hope, but not push. It's what I choose for myself and I'll lead by example.
There's the health thing too with the meat link with colon cancer.

I am a vegetarian for my health. I enjoy eating the meat-free foods that are out there and it also gets me to eat more fruits and veggies.

I don't need meat to survive, nor do I need it to be healthy. Therefore, meat is a luxury, and no one/creature should have to suffer so I can have a luxury.
It does not make sense to choose suffering when I can make the choice of no suffering.
That is why I am a vegetarian... but it is different for everyone.
