Bronchodilator medications in inhalers and nebulizers are derived from epinepherine. Our bodies naturally produce this chemical in adrenaline. One of the side effects of taking too much medication is a fast heartrate, lightheadedness, and possibly dizziness. These effects are amplified in younger, smaller patients. So, in effect, your 7 year old is getting a "buzz" from his inhaler.

Also, studies have shown that over-use of bronchodilators in some children can cause a loss of elasticity in the airways, promoting more serious lung problems in older age. For his safety, do not let him take more than is recommended. Also, talk to your doctor about possibly starting him on a maintenence regimen to decrease his use of his "rescue" inhaler.

If it's Albuterol, it increases his heart rate a bit and probably makes him a little lightheaded and dizzy. Most adults know this sensation as a "buzz". It's not harmful to feel that way, but it's never good to use more medicine than is prescribed. It sets the stage for other abuses of drugs later on, especially if the child is permitted to think it's ok to disobey the rules (prescription instructions) just because it makes him "feel happy".

Explain to him that he uses his inhaler to get medicine into his lungs, and that it is only safe to use medicine the way the doctor tells us to use it. You can further explain that the doctor has years of training to figure out how much of a medicine a person needs and how much that person can safely use. Also talk about how medicine is made of chemicals; some chemicals have effects that help us, like his inhaler, but that all chemicals can also cause some problems that are bad for us. When we use medicines, we want to only use just enough to help us.

Because you have not teached him the proper way of taking his inhaler,if you did then he would know that 7 is too much at 1 time.My 2 year old has the worst case of asthma the docs has ever seen.He is allowed 2-4 puffs and 6 in emergency.Teach him.Did you know that the inhaler causes his heart rate to increase and too much can cause him heart failure? Of course it makes him feel good. Those inhaler makes kids hyper.

Ok, I am going to sound weird, hope you can understand this.

The ingredients in the inhaler make your heart beat faster, and in order to do that, the adrenal glands have to secrete epinepharine, commonly known as adrenalin. It's normal, but don't let your child inhale more than perscribed. It can be dangerous.

no its certainly not a good thing - he needs to stick to the proper dosage. maybe you should take him along to your doctor or see the practice nurse if there is one
my son and grandsons had asthma and you really need to keep a close check on how much they are using.
