The landlord is responsible to provide safe environment in your home. This is required by law. If they don't want to fix it, then this might mean that they are not allowed to rent. Check with the state. If not taken care of, this could lead to getting sick often and even develop cancer.

You can become very sick from mold. Flu like symptoms or worse. Call the Rent Control
Tribunal. They can answer your questions. Information (i.e., 411) or the Operator (dial 0)should have the number or you can probably find it in the blue pages of the phone book (if you are in Canada, that is). You can also try calling City Hall. I know, at least in Canada, they will come and assess the mold problem and clean the mold-ridden area for you if it is deemed a health hazard.

The landlord is responsible for maintaining a safe environment, the tenant is responsible for keeping their environment clean. Mold, however, is something that can be a problem in both areas, safety and cleanliness...discuss it with your landlord, and check out your state's regulations on their official website.
