140/90 for an adult...

The so-called average is 120/80. This is a reference value and "normal" has a wide variation. The normal range of a systolic reading (the top number) is 90-140. 90 is a normal low, 140 is a normal high. The normal range for a diastolic reading (the bottom number) is 60-90. 60 is a normal low and 90 is a normal high. Readings that are consistently outside these ranges should be investigated.

As a general guide for a person up to the age of 40 at rest, add 100 to your age if you are male and 90 if you are female for your systolic pressure(the top number) over 40 it will depend on your fitness and any meds you take but it will "GENERALLY" fall pretty close
