If you have emphysema and you smoke, it's important to quit smoking. See your doctor to get proper treatment, so that you'll live as long and as comfortable a life as possible. Lots of people with emphysema find ways to enjoy a happy and productive life despite their disease.

Emphysema gets worse over time if you continue to smoke or breathe dirty air. The damage doesn't stop until you stop smoking and stop breathing dirty air. By quitting smoking now, you can't undo the damage that's already done, but you can protect your lungs from any more damage.

Unfortunately people who have emphysema will die from it eventually.

People with emphysema can live for a long time after they are diagnosed.

If you have emphysema, how long you'll live depends on many things:

What age you were diagnosed at

How bad your lung damage is

Whether you keep smoking, cut back or quit (cutting back is a start, quitting is the best!)

What kind of medical care and treatment you get

What other health problems you might have

People with emphysema eventually die from it, or from a complication of it.

Is there plenty wish of him getting a transplant quickly? Is his high quality of existence somewhat undesirable? the alternative to watch for a transplant or to enable nature take its direction is a decision in basic terms your dad could make. It feels like he's suffering badly if he's pondering letting himself die. Is he on or is he pondering hospice care? i've got seen many people die from this sickness. i will actual assure you that this is a painless dying. before everything, the guy may well be somewhat hectic as he fights for air, however the morphine and/or different drugs to calm him will very rapidly positioned him comfortable. by using fact the carbon dioxide builds up interior the blood, the guy turns into very, very sleepy till that is impossible to rouse him. he will purely slip right into a very deep sleep, his respiration will advance into peculiar and at last give up. there is not any sign of discomfort or misery in any respect. My heart is going out to you; this is a poor ingredient so which you will bypass by using. communicate to your dad, help him to appreciate what he needs to do, and understand regardless of determination he makes. ideally, a transplant could be accessible quickly, yet whilst he comes to a decision that is not rather well worth the wait by using fact he's suffering too plenty, this is a valid determination. Hospice care could help him AND something of your loved ones, no longer in basic terms by potential of making useful he's carefully gentle, yet by potential of offering plenty needed psychological and non secular help. xxxxxxx

No

If you take your meds, quit smoking, excercise a couple hours a week and stay away from your triggers you can probably live almost as long as if you didn't have it

I think it's like 1 or 2 years out of 60 something years

Not necessarily. But it does shorten your lifespan, make you more susceptible to getting other conditions, and reduce your quality of life.

It means you have reduced volume in your lungs, so not enough air is getting into your blood via your lungs. Smoking is the main cause, and if you carry on smoking, it seriously shortens your life.

we are all going to die it is one of those great certainties of life ! If you stop smoking though you should limit progression of disease so not necessarily a death sentence. Will always be more breathless and have a lower exercise tolerance than without it because it is irreversible.

Not necessarily but if you suffer from this you should definitely not smoke at all and you should keep away from anything that is likely to affect your respiration e.g. work which involves a smoky environment, heavy traffic, smog...etc and any other pollutants.
