Easy way to do it, that wont set you back too much is to do it Pot-Luck.
Go to Costco or Sams Club and get whatever booze you want. (you supply the drinks) Have your friends and co-workers bring food. Could even have some sort of sheet for people to put what they will bring, so you dont have 10 people bring chips. That is what my wife and I did, and it turned out great. Good food, great drinks and everyone had a great time.

Finger foods is very appropriate. You could have an "open house" and then the people you work with could come and leave and your friends could stay longer. Thats what I did. We just set up snacks and let people come and go as they pleased. The people who wanted to stayed and the people who didn't still got to be nosey and look at my home.

Make the theme "My First Potluck"
Ask guests to tell you what they're bringing when they rsvp - or on the invites mark, salad, appetizer, dessert, entree, etc on their card.
Or depending on the number of people you could also assign a bottle of wine, 6 pack, etc to your friends.
Invite whomever you choose, but if other people at work have opened their house to you it is polite to do the same.

Finger foods and cocktails are perfect! Only invite the people you're close with.

Any kind of party you choose to have is "acceptable." Invite only those you want to attend. It's your home and your party, so do as you please.
