Diabetes mellitus is impaired insulin secretion and variable degrees of peripheral insulin resistance leading to hyperglycemia. Early symptoms are related to hyperglycemia and include polydipsia, polyphagia, and polyuria. Later complications include vascular disease, peripheral neuropathy, and predisposition to infection. Diagnosis is by measuring plasma glucose. Treatment is diet, exercise, and drugs that reduce glucose levels, including insulin and oral antihyperglycemic drugs. Prognosis varies with degree of glucose control.

Diabetes Mellitus is insulin-dependant diabetes, and happens when your pancreas isn't producing insulin. Eating sugar, as sometimes suggested, is a myth. Too much "sugar eating binges" will not give you Diabetes Mellitus. If anyone tells you that, they are reading it from published material during the Cold War era. Its a myth.

However, eating too much sugar, along with a high-fat diet, over a long period of time, may lead the way toward Type 2 Diabetes.

Its important to note that Type 1 (diabetes mellitus) and Type 2 are two entirely different diseases, but both relate to insulin interaction and the pancreas. They are treated differently.

Well, the basic cause of diabetes is a relative defecit of insulin (not an excess of sugar, at least not directly). Whether that's due to poor (or no) insulin production or to normal or even high levels with resistance to it's effect depends on the type of diabetes.
