Hi!

Those two cuisines are very different!

I'd order something mild, like a mild chicken curry, a paratha or a chapathy (Indian bread roasted on a griddle), some mango chutney or other if they have one, and a side order of rice....

...or Chikken Tikka Masala which seems very popular these days or Tandoori Chicken which is very nice, and an Indian bread (see above) ...maybe some rice

if you wish to order an appetiser, a dish of samosas and chutney to go with them would be nice ... (to share ... do not eat too much because you will not be hungry when your dinner arrives...)

for dessert, I'd have chai (Indian tea which is milky and very good) and a sweet ... a laddoo, or a piece of "barfi" which is like fudge but made of almond or coconut ... etc ...or whatever strikes your fancy

On the way out of the restaurant, they offer some spice seeds in a little bowl or a package of supari .... have some... they are delicious

A word of warning .... try to not be too adventurous or you system might go into shock ... it is VERY different ....so if there is food left over that amounts to anything, have them pack it up and take it home... it really will taste good later ....

Peace & Love

Good advice from the other respondent, get a korma. It's not as spicy as some of the dishes but a good way to introduce yourself to this type of cuisine. My 6 year old daughter has been eating indian food for a few years now and korma is definitely her favourite.

Dry dishes like tandoori and tikka are good but not as nice as the dishes with a sauce. Indian, in my opinion, is better than chinese as there is no aftertaste or too much MSG.

Even better, go for a Thai, half way between chinese and indian!

Indian and Chinese foods are completely different. The only similarity is that they both have rice, except even that's different. The common meats in Indian is chicken, lamb, and fish. Chicken Korma is a good starter dish, mild with a lot of cream and almonds. My favorite is Chicken Tikka Masala. It chicken that's been barbacued in a tandoori oven, mixed in a reddish curry sauce. Lots of spices! Nann bread is a must. Also, pakoras or samosas, which are like deep-fried vegetable fritters, are excellent. A vegetable dish like Saag or Aloo Gobi is good. If you are daring try Rogan Josh, a great lamb dish.

Don't faff around with mild stuff just because you've not had it before - what rediculous advice.

And for godsake don't have a Chicken Tikka Masala, thats not even Indian food, it was created by the English for the English, it's about as Indian as the Queen.

Something like a Lamb Rogan Josh (Gosht) with some Keema Rice and a Sag Aloo will do you fine.

If you fancy something a little hotter try a Madras or a Jalfrezi for your main meat dish.

If they don't have keema rice go for plain pilau.

FYI - Indian food only became hot after the chilli was bought over to the region by the Portuguese - interesting fact for the dinner table for you :-)

No its not. Though India has its own version of Chinese food. The original Chinese food is somewhat sweet and bland. Indian chinese food is very spicy.
If you wanna order a typical Indian dish, then go in for Chicken Tikka, Chicken Tandoori, Butter Chicken, Dal Makhani (vegetarian), Reshmi Kebabs, Hara Bhara Kebabs (vegetarian), Veg.Biryani, Chicken Biryani, Chicken Kadai, Samosas (vegetarian), Dal kebabs (vegetarian), Palak Paneer (vegetarian)
Well, that should be it, and I'm hungry now after typing names of all that delicious food.
Enjoy!

You may want to choose a restaurant serves buffet. In my city, New York, most restaurants charge $5 ~ $9 for the lunch buffet and $10 ~ $20 for the dinner buffet.

If you prefer foods from the menu, I recommend taking Goat curry with rice or tandoori chicken with rice.

Ask yourself if you like Chinese curry...if you find them too spicy then go for a Korma or Pasanda (if you like creamy sauces - they are based on coconut and almond respectively). If you don't like creamy sauces, something like a bhuna (tomatoey) or dupiaza (onion based) might be better. They're a bit more spicy, but not too much.
If they do a Jaipuri or Dhansak dish, you might like that - not too hot but a bit tangy.
Don't take any notice of the crackpot who suggested a phal - it's the hottest thing on the menu! I think people only order it for a dare!

its so not similar . like at all . If you dont like really spicy food try ordering a KORMA .
For medium spice try something along the lines of a TIKKA MASALA . It depends what kind of flavours you like . But if your an indian virgin i would suggest sticking with a dish of either mild or medium spice .
