Thick green sputum is typical of a Pseudomonas infection. Cipro and its cousins are good at killing this, but you need to see your doctor for proper evaluation and a prescription.

You should probably go to the doctor and get on an antibiotic. You most definetely have an infection. Thick, green and/or yellow phlegm is NOT a good sign and is NOT due to smoking. Of course, the smoking doesn't help the cough, but it doesn't make your sputum yellow and green.

I believe too that you should check with a doctor; however, I am smoking (5-10 a day), and I am not really coughing, just always congested, not in the chest, just that backdrop in the throat, my ear is often shut, and I pretty much have sinus pressure a lot...and spit out yucky stuff...and that after being on 3 different prescriptions daily....part of my problem, I feel, is living in Houston! The air is really bad, and the humidity awful, airconditioning 9 months out of the year also...so I do think, all of these are factors, and it could be the same with you!

Could be from smoking but, it could also be from an upper respiratory infection. You should go to the doc to get it checked out in case it is more than just a smoker's cough.
